I Make Games Not Toys

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and it’s plain to see

That everyone’s excited by the gifts ‘neath the tree;

The stockings are hung by the Fireplace flue,

There’s one for each person, except Jasper with two;

The children are pretending to be sound asleep,

But intermittent giggles betray curious feet;

Mama is resting with the cat in her lap,

He has just settled down for a third evening nap.

Then out from the basement arose quite a noise,

The children ran screaming, “It’s Santa with Toys!”.

My body exhausted, my heart full of dread,

“Some assembly required” the packages read.

Quickly I grabbed all the blankets around,

The presents aren’t ready, they must not be found.

When, what to my reddening eyes I behold,

Two beautiful children, too adorable to scold.

Their questions ’bout Santa, set my mind off a tick,

I needed some answers – and I needed them quick.

The children must leave or they’ll see broken toys,

So I put finger to mouth and asked, “Hear that noise?”

“Up, ‘jammer! Up, Tsojcanth! Move back Mordenkainen!

The kids are awake and the neighbor’s complainin’!

The children just laughed and said, “Dad you’re a hoot!

Those aren’t their names!” but the point was now moot.

“Up now to bed” I said with a smile

Daddy will be downstairs for a while.”

So up to their bedrooms the children they flew,

With thoughts full of toys, and their stockings, too.

I went to each bed, gave a hug and a kiss

I know it’s all worth it – their smiling is priceless.

With vigor renewed, I descended the stairs

and re-read the instructions to make some repairs.

Page two of toy one and page one of toy two

Had been stuck to each other. Now what would I do?

Christmas came the next day, there was joy in the house.

I got a new game and my wife got a blouse.

The children were happy but were never quite sure

Of the mogrified thing that was sprawled on the floor.

The misshapen lump was just full of surprises,

It had five shiny wheels, each of them different sizes.

And seats for two kids faced in opp’site directions,

A flag on the kickstand and a missing midsection.

Over its circumference stuck rolls of duct tape,

The kids were so grateful, they just stood mouths a-gape.

Fueled by my coffee and lack of good sense,

I thought I was clever to avoid high expense.

Fathers take heed of the price that was paid

Don’t be a cheapskate, buy the presents pre-made!

I’m grateful to have a warm home full of love,

My family and friends are each gifts from above.

I hope you are cheered by my fictional plight,

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

Rogues’ Skills on potential 2e clones

So, let's say you're doing a 2e clone. It's the last TSR system remaining to be cloned, so why not? I mean, you could start with TSR 1070, the Second Edition's version of the Red Box. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Back to Rogues/Thieves/Sneaky so-and-so's that get to do cool stuff.

Myth and Magic by New Haven Games has a mechanic for proficiencies that is addressed by a d20 roll. Basically, Roll over this number (24 - STAT +2) with a d20. For proficiencies that it all well and good. Yet there is only one option to improve with this system. Buy the proficiency again and you get (24 - STAT +4) as the target number. Tweaking this formula a bit, let's restate the Rogue's ability table.

Pick Pockets - 6

Open Locks - 5

Find/Remove Traps - 4

Move Silently - 5

Hide in Shadows - 4

Detect Noise - 6

Climb Walls - 15

Read Languages - 0

At First level, the Rogue gets twelve points to spread out across these skills as they see fit. It is recommended that no more than six are given to any one skill, but that will be up to the GM. No skill can be raised higher than 20. There will be a table to show how high DEX affects each skill. A minimum DEX of 16 is required to have any affect on skills. High WIS can provide bonuses to Read Languages. (I know, not INT.) Just use the Attribute Bonus, no table needed.

DEX 16 | +1 Open Locks

DEX 17 | +1 Pick Pockets, +2 Open Locks, +1 Move Silently, +1 Hide in Shadows

DEX 18 | +2 Pick Pockets, +3 Open Locks, +1 Find/Remove Traps, +2 Move Silently, +2 Hide in Shadows

Once the rogue sets up their focus of abilities, future success is determined by looking at their score and figuring that Rolling over 24 - SCORE will determine success.

Okay, that's not enough for you? How about one mechanic to rule them all. Here's COMBAT:

Roll Over on a d20: 24 - AC + Weapon Proficiency + Modifiers. Weapon Proficiencies are purchased in +2 increments, Warriors start with 4 Weapon proficiencies, purchases can be stacked. My 1st Level Warrior is proficient with the longsword X2, longbow, and short sword. He has a STR of 18/80 giving him +2 to hit. He is using a +1 longsword to attack a creature with an AC 5. All of this boils down to 24 - 5(AC) + 4(Proficiency) +2 (STR) + 1 (Sword) = 12

Roll 12 or better to hit. Why does a 1st level Warrior have a +1 Longsword? Relax, it's an example. I wanted to provide a good example. In a real campaign, odds are VERY low that a 1st level Warrior would have a +1 weapon. If you do the math, a 1st level Warrior with a double weapon proficiency will calculate to a THAC0 of 20, THAC1 of 19, etc. Mages, with only one weapon proficiency, still calculate to a THAC0 of 20, THAC1 of 20, THAC2 of 20, THAC3 of 19 at 1st level.

So does that work for a simplified (as much as Second Edition was simple) mechanic to convert 2e stuff?

A Step Into Elsewhere

It's been one of those weeks where I'm not able to sleep very well. The sink is clogged and despite a 25 and 50 foot auger, I cannot seem to alleviate the problem.

Seeing my frustration, my loving wife asked me about household problems in Shayakand. She asked how if magic would be used to unclog drains or would folks do it the mechanical way.

It's funny how that question took me to the "Game within a Game" post I wrote on NMP.

I replied that most people in urban areas live in apartments that have no kitchen. For a few coppers, most eat at local eating places that serve as a kind of fast food place. As to whether or not garmadala experience drain clogs, the answer is based on the clientele. You see, if a basha loves to eat at a certain garmadala, the kitchen is blessed by a myriad of priests with several enchantments.

Being tired, though, I began to ramble quite a bit about the garmadala, the end of the Shayakand empire, the Garuda, the Amanakshi and various other things. My favorite rant, though, still brought me back to a little garmadala northeast of the market center near the largest library in Varama.

Varama served as the resort city for the emperors. The entire city was built to provide a seaside resort for the emperor and his satraps. After the empire dissolved, the city survived due to its extensive libraries and influx of peoples drawn to the milder climate and ocean breezes.

Walking through the busy street to reach the garmadala, I could smell the mint and cardamom coming from the large doorway leading into the serving area. On the L-shaped table are six dishes of delectable dishes - even the curry lentils in the first two tureens are a joy to the palate. There would be raised eyebrows, if I, a common scribe of the working class, purchased one of the savory meat dishes. But on a beautiful day like this with a breeze blowing off the cold water current that runs close to the shore tempering the cloudless sky - savory meats are worth the stares and the coin.

Strolling out from the serving area into a stone plaza, there are several tables offering chess with the meal, as long as you bring your pieces with you. The wooden pieces in my jhola have lost of bit of the green and gold paint, but they have been victorious more times than not.

Sitting at a table, a merchant asks for the pleasure of conversation and perhaps a game. Noticing my meal, I was mistaken for a man of higher class. Still, we talked for some time and the match was close. She and I made small talk about business, but inevitably we began discussing our favorite writings. We had both heard the rumors of an extant copy of the Book of Beginnings about the Mpura. The possibility of such a treasure appearing in a library made us both hope the rumors were true.

I ask to see her again and she readily accepted my invitation. In the Virama, a man of lower class can court a woman of higher class without raising so much as an eyebrow. After such a womderful meal and the hope for love - it is difficult to leave the table and make my way back to my humble apartment.

The smell of sea air, mint, and curry follow me back - even to my chair. It is easy to step into a place of imagination on sleepless nights like this.

The hint of mint and cardamom stays in my memory. The memories of a trip to a place that I could almost touch allows me to let go of the day's stresses enough to sleep perchance to dream. With a big moon in the sky, I am sure that I will dream of Shayakand.

I am sure that I will see my beloved there, wearing a sari as she did on our wedding day over six years ago. There we will be the spices, the libraries and the chatter of the market vendors. There will also be the breeze and the dancing on the shore.

Many thanks to my wife who helped me escape for a bit to help me sleep.

Good night to all.
